Does New Media Bring Us Closer?

We always have this debate in my "future advertising" class, most students and professors say that people are always on the phone talking or texting, they become more isolated. One of the examples a student gave us was that her boyfriend loves texting, so instead of calling her say "I love you", he always texts her "I love you". She feels it's less personal and intimate. There are also some students argue that new technology helps them to have more intimate relationships with other people. I personally agree that new technology makes our communication much easier and efficient if you use it properly. New media themselves can not decide people's life, it is the way in which people interact that generates the potential for harm or benefit. A cell phone has both calling and texting functions, so it is not up to the phone, it is the user who makes the decision of how to use it.
